One reason this plant is so popular is that it keeps its color better than many other foliage plants in lower light. In brighter indirect light, the red tones usually become stronger, while in dimmer spots the plant still remains decorative and easy to place.

Watering

Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly until excess drains from the pot. Empty any water that collects in the saucer so the roots are not left sitting in it.

Letting the soil dry slightly between waterings is healthier than keeping it constantly wet. The plant usually tolerates slight underwatering better than prolonged soggy soil.

Sunlight

Provide low to medium indirect light, with a preference for the brighter end of that range to maintain stronger red coloration. A position a little back from a bright window usually works well.

It can tolerate lower light better than many colorful houseplants, but intense direct midday sun can scorch or bleach the variegation.

Temperature

Aim for moderate, stable indoor temperatures, ideally around 64–77°F (18–25°C). This plant grows best when warmth stays even rather than shifting suddenly.

Keep it away from cold drafts, exterior doors, heater vents, and direct air conditioning. Prolonged cold can stress the foliage and reduce its tidy appearance.

Humidity

Use a rich organic, well-draining potting mix. A standard indoor plant mix with added perlite or fine bark works well because it holds some moisture while still allowing excess water to move through.
