Gazania
Gazania rigens
Updated Jul 21, 2026
Gazania (Gazania rigens)—also known as Treasure Flower—is a sun-loving bloomer with vivid daisy-like flowers, thriving in full sun, gritty fast-draining soil, and low-to-moderate watering once established.
About Gazania
Gazania is a sun-loving flowering plant grown for its bright daisy-like blooms and its ability to keep strong color in hot, exposed settings. It forms a low spreading mound of narrow leaves, often with silvery undersides, and works especially well in borders, gravel gardens, slopes, and sunny containers.
Its flowers are one of its defining features, but they show their best side only in strong light. In full sun, Gazania stays compact and opens freely, bringing a crisp, vivid look that feels especially at home in warm-climate planting schemes. In shadier or duller conditions, the blooms stay less open and the plant loses some of that animated effect.
Gazania performs best when treated more like a dryland perennial than a thirsty bedding plant. In the right place, it becomes a low-effort, high-color plant that handles heat and short dry periods with much less stress than many softer flowering plants.
How to Care for Gazania
Watering
Water Gazania regularly while it is establishing, then let the soil dry between waterings. Once settled in the ground, Gazania is drought-tolerant and usually needs a deep soak mainly during longer dry spells.
In containers, Gazania dries faster and should be checked more often, but the potting mix should still not remain soggy. For Gazania, constant wetness is a much greater risk than slightly delayed watering.
Sunlight
Full sun is essential for Gazania. It is the main reason the plant keeps a compact shape and produces its best flowering display.
Gazania flowers often stay more closed in shade or dull weather, so the brightest, most open position is the right one if the goal is strong bloom and a sharper overall look.
Temperature
Gazania thrives in warm weather and handles heat well once established. It is well suited to bright, exposed summer conditions.
Gazania does need protection from frost, though. In colder climates, it is often treated as a seasonal plant or overwintered under cover.
Humidity
Low to moderate humidity suits Gazania well. Airflow matters more than high moisture in the air.
In more humid climates, Gazania benefits from open spacing and foliage that does not stay wet too long. Avoiding crowding helps the plant stay cleaner and healthier.
Soil
Use well-draining soil. Gazania grows best where water moves through quickly and the roots do not stay in cold, wet ground.
Sandy or gravelly loam is especially suitable for Gazania. Heavy clay is much less suitable unless it is improved or replaced with raised planting and mineral grit that helps excess water escape.
Feeding
In the ground, Gazania often performs well in average to lean soil and does not need heavy feeding. Too much fertilizer can push softer growth that is less desirable.
In containers, light feeding during the main bloom period can help support repeat flowering. For Gazania, a restrained approach works better than heavy nitrogen feeding.
Pruning & Grooming
Deadhead Gazania regularly to keep the plant tidy and encourage continued blooming through the warm season.
If Gazania becomes straggly, light trimming can help restore a neater shape, especially before moving container plants under cover for winter.
Pests & Problems
Gazania is generally low-maintenance. Under protection indoors, aphids can sometimes become a nuisance.
For outdoor Gazania, the most common problem is poor drainage. If the plant begins to decline, the first thing to review is soil heaviness and watering frequency rather than pests.
Overwintering
In mild climates, Gazania may survive outdoors if drainage stays good through winter. In colder regions, container-grown Gazania can be overwintered indoors in bright light.
When Gazania is kept under cover, watering should stay conservative so the root zone does not remain too wet.
