Gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) is a tuberous flowering houseplant with velvety leaves and large bell-shaped blooms, growing best in bright indirect light, warm conditions, high humidity, and gently moist well-draining soil.

About Gloxinia

Gloxinia is a tuberous houseplant grown for its velvety leaves and large bell-shaped flowers in rich jewel tones. The soft foliage forms a low rosette, and from that base the blooms rise on short sturdy stalks, giving the plant a full, concentrated display of color.

The flowers can be plain, ruffled, edged, spotted, or bicolored, which makes the plant feel especially generous for its size. When several blooms are open at once, Gloxinia has a very dense, theatrical look, with velvet-textured leaves below and broad flared flowers above.

Its growth depends on the tuber beneath the soil. That stored energy supports the flowering season and also determines how strongly the plant returns after dormancy. When its cycle is understood and respected, Gloxinia can give repeated displays rather than acting as a one-time plant.

How to Care for Gloxinia

Watering

Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist while Gloxinia is in active leaf and bloom, but never waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top half inch (1 cm) of the mix feels dry, then let excess drain away.

Avoid splashing water onto the leaves or into the crown, because the velvety surface can hold droplets and lingering moisture may lead to spotting or rot. Never leave the pot standing in water.

As flowering ends and the foliage begins to yellow, reduce watering gradually until the mix is only barely moist, then allow it to become almost dry while the tuber rests.

Sunlight

Provide bright, indirect light, similar to the light used for African violets. An east-facing windowsill or a bright north window works well for Gloxinia.

At a stronger south- or west-facing window, set the plant back a little or filter the light. Too little light leads to weaker, more stretched growth and fewer flowers, while harsh midday sun can scorch leaves and fade blooms.

Temperature

Keep Gloxinia in warm, stable conditions during active growth, ideally around 64–77°F (18–25°C).

Avoid cold drafts from windows or doors, and avoid hot dry air from heaters. Temperatures much below about 59°F (15°C) can slow growth and increase stress, especially if the soil is wet.

During dormancy, the resting tuber should be kept cool, dry, and frost-free until new buds begin to appear again.

Humidity

Gloxinia appreciates high humidity, especially while leaves and flowers are present.

In very dry indoor air, leaf edges may brown and buds may not open properly. Grouping plants, using a pebble tray, or placing a small humidifier nearby can help.

Avoid misting directly onto the foliage or flowers, because water droplets can remain on the velvety surface and encourage fungal problems.

Soil

Use a light, well-draining mix similar to an African violet substrate. Gloxinia grows best in a fluffy medium that holds gentle moisture while still allowing excess water to pass through quickly.

This helps keep the tuber and roots from sitting in a heavy saturated mass. Plant the tuber in a pot with drainage holes, with the top of the tuber at or slightly above the soil surface.

Feeding

During active growth and flowering, feed Gloxinia lightly every 2–4 weeks with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer suited to flowering houseplants.

Regular light feeding supports stronger foliage and better flowering, while heavy infrequent feeding can lead to salt buildup and stress. Stop feeding once the leaves begin to yellow and dormancy is clearly starting.

Dormancy

After the flowering season, it is normal for Gloxinia to die back. As the leaves yellow and collapse, reduce watering gradually and allow the top growth to dry off.

The tuber can remain in its pot, or rest in barely moist medium in a cool, dry, frost-free place. Once small buds begin forming again, move it back into brighter light and restart gentle watering for the next growth cycle.
