Night-Blooming Jasmine (pot)
Cestrum nocturnum

Night-Blooming Jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum), also known as Lady of the Night and Night-Blooming Jessamine, is a fast-growing shrub with fragrant evening flowers that thrives in sun, rich soil, and steady moisture.
About Night-Blooming Jasmine
Night-Blooming Jasmine is a fast-growing, pot-friendly shrub grown mainly for fragrance rather than showy color. By day it is a glossy green plant with a fairly simple look, but after dusk the small tubular flowers open and release a strong, sweet scent that can travel well beyond the pot.
Its appeal comes from timing as much as appearance. The flowers are pale and narrow rather than bright or dramatic, but they open in the evening and create a much stronger presence at night than they do during the day. That makes the plant especially effective on patios, balconies, and near seating areas where the fragrance can be noticed after sunset.
In containers, Night-Blooming Jasmine grows as a vigorous branching shrub that can be kept compact with pruning or allowed to become larger if space permits. In warm conditions it often stays leafy for long periods, while in cooler or less favorable conditions it may drop foliage and recover again when warmth and light improve.
It also helps to remember that this is a shrub, not a drought-loving plant. It responds best to bright light, richer soil, regular watering, and reliable drainage. One practical point matters as well: the berries and other parts are considered toxic if ingested, so placement around pets and children should be chosen carefully.
How to Care for Night-Blooming Jasmine
Watering
Keep watering moderate. During active growth and warm weather, water when the top layer of soil has dried slightly, then water thoroughly until the excess drains out. The goal is a root zone that stays moist but still airy, never bone-dry for long periods and never constantly wet.
In pots, Night-Blooming Jasmine usually shows stress quickly. Long dry spells can lead to leaf drop and slowed growth, while prolonged wetness can cause yellowing, decline, and root trouble. In cooler months, reduce watering sharply and let the pot dry more between waterings because the plant uses less moisture when light and temperature fall.
Sunlight
Choose full sun for the best flowering and stronger, sturdier growth. Night-Blooming Jasmine can tolerate partial shade, but blooming is usually heavier when the plant receives more direct light.
If it is moved from lower light into intense sun, acclimate it over 1–2 weeks so the foliage can adjust more gradually. In extremely hot climates, a little afternoon shade can help the plant stay fresher without reducing flowering too heavily.
Temperature
Aim for moderate temperatures around 64–77°F (18–25°C) and keep the plant frost-free. Night-Blooming Jasmine grows and flowers more readily when conditions stay warm and nights remain mild.
If temperatures approach the low teens or colder, protect the plant or move the pot to shelter. Cold combined with wet soil is the condition most likely to cause serious setbacks, so watering should also be reduced when temperatures drop.
Humidity
High humidity is preferred, especially when the plant is grown indoors or in hot, dry air. Higher humidity helps Night-Blooming Jasmine keep fresher foliage and reduces stress during warmer weather.
Humidity should still be balanced with airflow and correct watering, because moist air does not mean the soil should stay soaked. In a dry home during winter, a humidifier nearby or a brighter, more humid room can make conditions easier for the plant.
Soil
Use rich organic soil that also drains well. The mix should be fertile enough to support shrub-like growth while still allowing excess water to move through quickly.
For Night-Blooming Jasmine, a quality potting mix improved with perlite or pumice for air pockets, plus a little bark or coco chips for structure, works well. Drainage holes are essential, and refreshing the mix once it becomes compacted helps prevent slow, stale soil around the roots.
Pruning & Grooming
Prune to control size and encourage branching. Night-Blooming Jasmine responds well to shaping, and light trimming during the growing season can help it stay fuller and better proportioned in a pot.
If the plant becomes leggy, a harder prune at the right time can reset its structure. After heavier pruning, strong light is important so the new growth comes back compact rather than weak and stretched.
Overwintering
If winters are cool where you live, treat it as a container plant and move it into a bright, warm place before cold weather settles in. Night-Blooming Jasmine often slows down indoors and may drop some leaves while adjusting.
Keep it in brighter conditions than a typical low-light houseplant and water less often than in summer, using just enough moisture to prevent severe drought stress without keeping the mix wet.
Pests & Problems
In containers, watch for whiteflies and other sap-sucking pests, especially when the air is still and plants are crowded together. Night-Blooming Jasmine can also drop leaves suddenly when it is stressed by cold, drought swings, or waterlogged soil.
When problems appear, correct the environment first by checking light, temperature stability, and drainage around the roots. Those factors usually matter more than adding extra fertilizer or increasing watering.
