Aim for partial shade or dappled light. Umbrella Bamboo usually looks best when it is protected from intense afternoon sun, especially in warm climates.

It can tolerate more sun where summers are mild, but stronger direct exposure often leads to leaf curl and a more tired appearance. A slightly cooler, shadier position usually gives the best foliage and the most graceful shape.

Temperature

Umbrella Bamboo is a cold-hardy bamboo that handles winter chill well, but it is less tolerant of sustained heat than many people expect.

Humidity

Moderate humidity is usually enough for Umbrella Bamboo, but the plant benefits from conditions that do not dry the leaves and soil too quickly.

In exposed windy places or very dry air, the foliage may lose its softer relaxed look. Wind shelter and mulching can help reduce that stress. In hot humid climates, keep the root zone moist while still allowing the site to dry during the day.
