Dark brown or black spots ringed with yellow on Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) leaves — appearing on the lower leaves first and spreading upward — are the classic sign of fungal leaf spot, driven by wet foliage. Why Do My Chrysanthemum Leaves Have Brown Spots?

Spotting on Chrysanthemum foliage is common, and the pattern points to the cause. Most often it's a fungal leaf spot disease, but a few culprits look alike:

  • Dark brown to black spots with yellow halos, starting on lower leaves → fungal leaf spot (Septoria, Alternaria, Cercospora). The most common cause.
  • Water-soaked spots turning brown, with a yellow or reddish border → bacterial leaf spot.
  • Brown, V-shaped patches bounded by leaf veins, working up from the bottom → foliar nematodes.
  • Orange or brown pustules on leaf undersides → rust, a different disease.
  • Yellowing then browning with soggy soil → overwatering and root stress rather than a leaf disease.

The unifying trigger for the disease versions is moisture: prolonged leaf wetness and high humidity, made worse by crowding and poor air circulation.

Is It Fungal Leaf Spot?

This is the leading cause. Several fungi — including Septoria, Alternaria, and Cercospora — infect Chrysanthemum leaves, and they follow a recognizable course: small yellow spots appear first, then darken to brown or black and enlarge, often merging into large dead patches until the whole leaf dies. Tellingly, the lowest leaves are usually hit first, and infected leaves may wither but cling to the stem for a while rather than dropping cleanly. Tiny black fruiting bodies are sometimes visible within the spots.

The disease thrives wherever leaves stay wet, so control centers on keeping foliage dry and reducing the fungal load:

  • Remove and destroy affected leaves as soon as you spot them, and hand-pick symptomatic lower leaves from lightly affected plants.
  • Water at the base only, never overhead, so you're not wetting the foliage or splashing spores.
  • Clean up fallen debris, since the fungi overwinter in old plant material and reinfect the next season.
  • Improve air circulation by spacing plants farther apart and avoiding overcrowding.

Could It Be Bacterial Rather Than Fungal?

Sometimes the spots are bacterial, and the look is slightly different — water-soaked spots that turn brown, often with a distinctive yellow or reddish border, sometimes leading to leaf drop. A quick field test helps: hold the leaf to the light. Transparency in the spot suggests a fungal problem, while a solid, water-soaked look leans bacterial.

Bacterial leaf spot spreads the same way fungal spots do — through water splash and contaminated tools — so the response overlaps:

  • Keep foliage dry and water at the soil line.
  • Sanitize tools between plants, and wash hands after handling infected foliage.
  • Remove and bin infected leaves rather than composting them.

Because fungicides don't control bacterial disease, correctly identifying it matters — for bacterial spots, sanitation and dry foliage are your only real tools.

How Do I Tell Leaf Spot From Foliar Nematodes?

This distinction trips up a lot of gardeners, because foliar nematodes — microscopic roundworms that infest the leaves — produce brown patches easily mistaken for fungal spots. Two clues separate them:

  • Shape: nematode damage forms yellow-to-brown, V-shaped lesions bounded by the leaf veins, giving an angular, blocky look, whereas fungal spots are more rounded.
  • Color: nematode lesions tend to be brown, while fungal leaf spots are typically blacker.

Like the fungal diseases, nematodes move in films of water on wet leaves and stems, swimming up to infect higher leaves, and they overwinter in plant debris. Control is similar too: reduce leaf moisture, avoid overhead watering, and remove and destroy infested leaves and debris. There's no simple spray cure, so prevention and sanitation carry the load.

What About Rust and Powdery Mildew?

Two other diseases cause discolored leaves and are worth recognizing so you don't misdiagnose plain leaf spot:

  • Rust: shows as white, pinkish, or light-brown-to-orange pustules on the leaf undersides, with pale spots on the upper surface. Remove infected leaves, space plants for airflow, water without wetting the foliage, and choose resistant varieties where rust is a recurring problem.
  • Powdery mildew: a white powdery coating on the leaf surface, favored by damp, shady, crowded conditions — distinct from rust's undersides pustules.

All of these share the same cultural weak points — humidity, wet leaves, and poor airflow — so the same preventive habits protect against the whole group.

When Should I Use a Fungicide?

For most home plantings, cultural control handles leaf spot without chemicals — removing infected leaves, watering at the base, spacing for airflow, and clearing debris are usually enough. Reserve fungicides for severe or persistent outbreaks, applying a product labeled for Chrysanthemum leaf diseases according to its directions, and bear in mind they work on fungal problems but not bacterial ones or nematodes.

The most effective long-term approach is prevention built into how you grow the plant:

  • Keep leaves dry — water the soil, not the foliage, and ideally in the morning so any splashes dry quickly.
  • Space and ventilate, giving each plant room so air moves freely and leaves dry fast after rain or dew.
  • Practice good sanitation, clearing fallen and infected leaves through the season and at season's end so pathogens can't overwinter.

Damaged, spotted leaves won't recover, so remove the worst and let the plant push clean new growth. Keep the foliage dry and the planting airy, and a Chrysanthemum shrugs off leaf spot as a manageable nuisance rather than a threat to the whole plant.
