Powdery mildew looks like a pale dusting at first. Small white or gray patches appear on young leaves, tender shoots, flower buds, or new stem tips. As the infection spreads, the coating can become thicker and more obvious, especially on fresh growth.

The newest growth is often the most affected. Leaves may curl, twist, pucker, or look smaller than normal. Flower buds can be coated before they open, and heavily infected buds may open poorly or fail to open at all.

Why does powdery mildew keep showing up?

Crape Myrtle often develops powdery mildew when it is growing in a site that stays humid around the canopy. The disease is favored by shade, crowded branches, poor airflow, humid nights, and susceptible varieties.

Unlike many fungal leaf diseases, powdery mildew does not need leaves to stay wet for long periods. It can develop when the air is humid even if the leaf surface is not soaked. That is why a tree in a shaded, still corner may mildew even when it is not being watered overhead.

Suckers at the base can make the problem worse. They produce soft, crowded shoots near the ground, where air movement is weaker. Once those shoots are infected, mildew can move onto the upper parts of the plant.

How to treat powdery mildew on Crape Myrtle?

Start with the growing conditions. Powdery mildew on Crape Myrtle is often easier to reduce by changing light and airflow than by repeatedly spraying after the coating is already heavy.

  • Move or plant in full sun when the tree is still small enough to relocate.

Pruning can help, but it should be selective. Cut out a few badly infected tips if the outbreak is limited. Remove suckers from the base and thin branches that crowd the center of the canopy. This helps sunlight and air reach more of the plant.

However, no blooms can also come from too much shade, late pruning, winter injury, or excess nitrogen. If the plant has plenty of leaves but few flowers and no white coating, mildew may not be the main problem.

Recovery is judged by the next flush of growth. If new leaves open cleaner, buds form normally, and the white coating stops spreading, the care changes are working. If fresh shoots keep mildewing, return to the bigger causes: shade, cultivar susceptibility, and poor airflow.
