Olive Tree (Olea europaea) develops peacock spot when Venturia oleaginea infects wet foliage during mild weather. Round, dark lesions with olive-gray rings and yellow halos are the clearest sign, especially on leaves in the lower, shaded canopy.

Recognize the Characteristic Leaf Pattern

Peacock spot, also called olive leaf spot or peacock eye, usually begins on the upper leaf surface as small, sooty or brown-green marks. The spots expand into circles roughly 2–12 mm across. Mature lesions often contain concentric olive-green, gray, and dark brown rings, creating the eye-like pattern behind the disease’s name.

A yellow halo may develop around each lesion. Several spots can merge when infection is heavy, leaving larger discolored areas. On the underside, a dark brown streak may sometimes appear along the central vein, although the upper-surface rings remain the most useful visual clue.

  • Early stage: Subtle brown-green or soot-colored circular marks.
  • Established infection: Dark concentric rings, sometimes with a velvety surface and yellow border.
  • Advanced damage: Yellowing beyond the lesions, premature leaf fall, sparse lower branches, and occasional twig dieback.

Leaves in the lower and inner canopy are commonly affected first. Spots can occasionally form on fruit stalks or developing olives, but leaf symptoms are far more common. A diagnosis is less certain if the damage consists only of irregular scorch, fine stippling, or uniform yellowing without circular lesions.

Understand Why Wet Weather Starts the Disease

The fungus produces spores on infected leaves that remain attached to the tree. Rain and wind-driven droplets move those spores to susceptible foliage. Continuous leaf wetness combined with moderate temperatures creates the highest infection risk, which is why outbreaks usually intensify during rainy autumns, mild winters, or wet springs.

Dense foliage stays damp longer after rain, dew, or overhead irrigation. The lower canopy also receives less sunlight and air movement, so moisture evaporates slowly there. Trees in sheltered, low-lying, coastal, or poorly drained sites consequently face greater pressure than trees in open, dry locations.

Hot, dry summer weather limits active fungal growth, but it does not necessarily eliminate the pathogen. Some infected leaves remain on the tree and can produce new spores when cooler, wetter conditions return.

Allow for a Long Delay Between Infection and Spots

Visible lesions do not always appear soon after spores enter a leaf. Peacock spot can remain latent for weeks or months, particularly during cold periods or hot, dry weather. A spring outbreak may therefore reflect infection that occurred during earlier rains rather than a recent watering mistake.

This delay also explains why a tree can look improved in summer after dropping many affected leaves. A temporarily cleaner canopy is not proof that the disease has gone. Surviving infected foliage can carry it into the next favorable season.

Home testing with sodium or potassium hydroxide is sometimes described as a way to reveal hidden lesions, but these chemicals are caustic and the test can miss early infections. For an uncertain or valuable specimen, send samples to a plant diagnostic service instead of attempting a chemical leaf test.

Reduce Existing Disease Pressure Carefully

Inspect the whole canopy, beginning with shaded lower branches. Photograph representative leaves and note whether the affected area expands after rainy periods. Remove dead twigs and badly congested shoots during dry weather, using cuts that preserve the tree’s natural framework.

Do not strip every spotted leaf from the tree. Heavy manual defoliation removes working foliage and can further weaken flowering and fruit production. The main objective is to protect healthy leaves and reduce conditions that support new infections, not to make the canopy look spotless immediately.

Collect heavily affected prunings rather than leaving them tangled beneath the canopy. Fallen-leaf cleanup can improve general orchard hygiene, but it should not be treated as the main control because the fungus primarily survives and produces spores on infected leaves still attached to the tree.

Apply Fungicide Before the Main Infection Period

Copper-based fungicides are widely used as preventive treatments for peacock spot. They protect uninfected tissue and can reduce the amount of viable inoculum, but they do not restore leaves that already have permanent lesions. Timing and coverage matter more than spraying after every new spot becomes visible.

Use only a product legally registered for olives and peacock spot in your location. In climates with wet winters, the usual protective window is shortly before autumn rains begin. A second treatment may be appropriate in late winter or spring if prolonged wet weather continues and the product label permits another application.

Coat the outer and inner canopy evenly without allowing spray to run off. Follow the label’s dose, protective-equipment requirements, reentry period, harvest interval, maximum number of applications, and restrictions around flowering. Avoid homemade mixtures or stronger-than-label concentrations. Copper can accumulate in soil and harm aquatic life, so prevent drift and runoff into drains, ponds, and waterways.

Registered products and permitted timings differ by country, crop use, and whether fruit will be harvested. When disease is severe or copper use is restricted, a local agricultural adviser can identify approved alternatives and an appropriate resistance-management schedule.

Shorten the Time Leaves Stay Wet

Prune lightly each year to admit sun and moving air through the canopy. Remove crossing, inward-growing, or crowded shoots rather than opening large holes all at once. Better spacing also allows a labeled protectant to reach the lower and interior leaves where infection commonly begins.

Direct irrigation toward the root zone and avoid wetting the foliage, especially late in the day. Drip irrigation is preferable where practical. Correct waterlogged soil, blocked drainage, or constant surface saturation, and keep tall weeds from pressing against the lowest branches.

Avoid forcing dense, soft growth with excessive nitrogen. Use soil or leaf analysis to guide fertilization, including any potassium correction, instead of adding nutrients on suspicion alone. An oversized, shaded canopy can remain wet long after the surrounding area has dried.

Use a Seasonal Control Plan

  1. Late summer or early autumn: Check the lower canopy for old rings, thin crowded growth, and leaves that survived from the previous season.
  2. Before regular autumn rain: Complete necessary light pruning and apply a locally approved preventive fungicide if the tree has a history of peacock spot.
  3. During wet weather: Keep irrigation off the foliage and avoid working through the canopy while leaves are wet.
  4. Late winter or spring: Reinspect new and older foliage. Repeat protection only when persistent wet conditions, disease history, and the label support it.
  5. During dry summer weather: Assess canopy density and record defoliated sections; do not assume seasonal suppression equals eradication.

Judge Recovery by New Foliage

Existing rings will remain visible until affected leaves fall. Recovery is shown by clean new leaves, fewer fresh lesions after rain, reduced premature leaf drop, and stronger growth on lower branches. A severely affected tree may need more than one season of consistent prevention before its canopy becomes dense again.

Continue monitoring even after symptoms decline because latent infections can bridge dry or cold periods. Keeping the canopy open, the foliage as dry as conditions allow, and preventive treatment aligned with the local rainy season offers the most reliable long-term control.
